Change is difficult, but only if we think that we are depriving ourselves. Changing our outlooks is perhaps the most important change we can make. By engaging in a building process rather than an exercise in deprivation, lifestyle modification is not a punishment; it becomes your passion. This is the ultimate Healthful Evolution.
As we grow older, we may feel we have been cursed by challenges like heart disease and other illnesses. It is all too easy to feel as if life is against us, our days are numbered, and things are only going to get worse from here on out. This attitude, however, while understandable, is not going to do us any good. In fact, it causes our bodies to flood our bloodstream with unhealthy chemicals that actually accelerate the disease process.
We have the power to change the energy flow of our thoughts. To use a common cliché, we need to assume that our cup is half full, not half empty. This attitude is something best practiced on a daily basis. I often find it challenging to embrace a positive attitude, so I have adopted the simple exercise of listing all the things I am grateful for. Gratitude is a powerful and healing energy that banishes negativity in a miraculous way.
When we start to put our attention on the things we have to feel grateful for instead of the things we feel bad about, we change the energy flow in our lives, our minds, and our beings. Spiritual teachers tell us, “Where attention goes, energy flows.” Our reality focuses on the things we spend the most time on . If every day we focused on what is wrong, then that is where we are going to spend all of our time. If we focus on ten things we are grateful for, however, our energy will shift, and we will begin to lead significantly happier and healthier lives.
I am not saying that you should deny the difficulties and problems in life. But in each and every one of these challenges we can find reasons for gratitude. We can be grateful for the opportunities they present for us to grow, to transform, to become more conscious, and even to change our unhealthy lifestyles to healthy lifestyles.
