What is Health?

“Health is a state of complete harmony of the body, mind, and spirit.” –B.K.S. Iyengar

In 1946, The World Health Organization took the bold step of offering a broad definition of health, describing it as “a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” It surprises people when they hear this for the first time because mot believe that in order to be healthy, you have to be free of disease, The reality is that everyone will have to deal with health issues sooner or later. Being healthy does not mean being free from all illness, but it can imply you are free from dis-ease.

Dis-ease literally means you are out of ease, or out of balance. Often an illness or injury causes this lack of balance, but this does not have to be the case. In fact, by coming to terms with an illness or injury on a profound level, you live a life of balance and ease. While you are nor free of the illness, I would argue that you are healthy, You have integrated the illness into your being in such a way that you found the hidden blessing inside a dark experience in your life. Health is about having a stable foundation so when you do encounter challenges in your life, you can integrate them into your being and remained balanced and at ease.

Life is a beautiful thing. It is a gift we have been given to use in any way we desire. It does not necessarily mean we are free from coronary artery disease, hypertension, arthritis, or any other illness. It means how we handle these illnesses and what we do with our lives is totally up to us. How do we change our reality? Energy!

It is scientifically proven that everything in the universe is made up of energy.  That is the whole point of Albert Einstein’s famous equation, E=MC2, which explains how mass and energy can be changed into each other. When you look around you, everything is made out of energy. Even our body is composed of various energy flows. There are many, many parts of our lifestyle that affect our energy flows which I like to divide into draining (toxic) and energizing (nontoxic) behaviors. Eating unhealthy food, a draining behavior, will make you feel bad. If you eat healthy food, you will feel energized. If you are active, you will feel good. If you are too active, you will not feel well. In the end, it is all a matter of simple cause and effect.

My point is not to tell you what is good or not good for you to eat, do, or think. That is something that you will learn to discern for yourself as you cultivate greater awareness and engagement with your own body. Once you are able to consciously connect with energy currents within yourself, you can harmonize your inner energy and learn how to work with it. With practice, you will cultivate a deep connection with your inner healing energy, which is required to achieve a state of ease. In the end, the only way to counter disease is with ease.
